Changes in total body calcium and sodium in osteomalacia.
نویسندگان
چکیده
Serial measurements were made of total body calcium and sodium, using whole body neutron activation analysis, in six patients being treated for osteomalacia. All showed a rise in total body calcium ranging from 3 to 30%; this continued for up to 24 months after the start of treatment, though complete healing had apparently occurred after 6 months on the basis of histological examination of biopsy specimens of bone. As the total body calcium rose there was a fall in the non-exchangeable sodium pool in bone.

Increases in osteoid volume with sodium fluoride, calcium, and vitamin D treatment are well documented. Small decreases in mineralisation rate have also been reported.2 But osteomalacia in the presence of high plasma 25-OHD concentrations has not been described in patients treated with this regimen. The plasma 1,25-(OH)2D3 concentration in our patient was just below the lower limit of normal, b...
متن کاملInvestigating Changes in Serum Biochemical Parameters in Opium Addicts Before and During Addiction Treatment
Background: Iran is one of the major consumers of opium and opiate substances in the world. Addiction has become a very important issue in the 21st century and an urgent one in Iran. The consumption of this substance leaves a variety of impacts on the human body. The goal of this study is to investigate the changes of the biochemical parameters derived from opiate substances in addicts during t...
متن کاملANTICONVULSANT THERAPY-INDUCED ALTERATIONS IN CALCIUM HOMEOSTASIS
35 epileptic patients, aged 10 to 58 years (mean 23), who were taking anticonvulsant drugs were studied. The patients exhibited a 34% reduction in serum calcium levels, a 41 % increase in serum alkaline phosphatase activity and a slight but insignificant decrease in serum phosphate, compared to untreated controls. These changes appear to be related to the anticonvulsant drug taken, in the ...
متن کاملCritical role of vitamin D in sulfate homeostasis: regulation of the sodium-sulfate cotransporter by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3.
As the fourth most abundant anion in the body, sulfate plays an essential role in numerous physiological processes. One key protein involved in transcellular transport of sulfate is the sodium-sulfate cotransporter NaSi-1, and previous studies suggest that vitamin D modulates sulfate homeostasis by regulating NaSi-1 expression. In the present study, we found that, in mice lacking the vitamin D ...
متن کاملEvaluating the Serum Levels of Calcium, Chloride, Potassium and Sodium in the Stroke Patients
Backgrounds and Aims: Stroke incidence rate has increased during the past 2 decades. The question of whether calcium, chloride, potassium, sodium levels are associated with stroke has remained controversial. The present study aimed to evaluate the serum levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, and chloride within stroke patients. Materials and Methods: The study participants consisted of 5...
